Honing Skills at a Children Photography Workshop | Northern Virginia Portrait Photographer

As a PPA certified professional photographer, I regularly attend professional workshops to improve craft as well as to keep abreast of the latest trends and techniques.

This past week I was pleased to study children's portrait photography with the legendary Sandy Puc.  She is a Canon Explorer of Light, and her studio work has focused on children and family portraits over a career spanning 28 years and counting.  (She hopes to photograph yet another generation of kids before retiring!)

The above is a portion of our official class photo.  The instructor is in the middle fast asleep.  (Yes, she "dreamed up" the idea for this photo shoot!)  I am on the left, reading her excellent book Bellies & Babies, about maternity and baby photography.  (And, yes, the copy is mine -- now autographed! -- and the many blue page markers are real.)

It was a fascinating class.  Watching Sandy work with small children and then explain her technique in a small class setting over four days was phenomenal.

As I begin to make children's portraiture a bigger part of my own photography business, I look forward to building on the lessons she taught me one dreary, rain-soaked week in Cape May, New Jersey.
