"Big Bad John" by Roger Hammons
Merit Award, 2016 International Photographic Competition
I knew Oliver's handsome ruggedness would make for an exceptional portrait when I invited him to my Ashburn, Virginia portrait studio. I knew that he was an outdoorsman with a military background. But, boy, was I blown away with the storytelling possibilities when he arrived in the studio with his gear!
This wonderful portrait is one of my favorites from our collaboration.
I was so excited by the image that, as soon as I completed the portrait, I rushed to enter it in the 2016 International Photographic Competition (IPC) just before the deadline. IPC is the prestigious annual competition sponsored by the Professional Photographers of America, in which professional photographers from around the world send their best four images of the year for judging.
Every entry needs a catchy title to help the judges appreciate the photographer's intentions, so Oliver became "Big Bad John." The judges complimented me on the composition, presentation, and beautiful portrait lighting. Most of all, the judges loved the storytelling. One judge stated, "I love the intensity, that fierce look on his face. The title says it all."
Oliver is known as a man you can depend upon. "Big Bad John" didn't let me down either!
