Beautiful Lydia in Hijab | Northern Virginia Portrait Photographer

Northern Virginia portrait photographer Roger Hammons shares a portrait of a bi-racial teenage girl in hijab.

A LOVELY PRESENCE.

This past Sunday, I photographed two teenage sisters, Lydia and Amina, as part of a joint project with Gallery252 and Blue World Media Network.

Of the many lovely portraits that I took of Lydia, the older sister, this is one of my favorites.  In this portrait, Lydia wears a hijab as a celebration of the family's multi-ethnic heritage.  She and her mother fashioned the hijab by draping a geometrically-patterned cloth that I provided.  I love the beautiful lines of the headdress and how its colors flatter Lydia's skin tones.  By framing Lydia's face, the hijab draws attention to her beautiful eyes and winning smile.

The portrait was taken in studio.  The lighting is a mixture of natural light, illuminating her face, and artificial light accenting the top of her head and the right side of her body.  The natural light comes in from the front windows of the studio, while the artificial light is from a studio strobe raised high, almost to the ceiling, behind her.   Both lights are angled to flatter her facial features as well as emphasize the texture and soft folds of the garment.

It's a striking portrait of a lovely young woman.
