GUITAR PLAYING MAN.
On Thursday, as part of my "One Light Wonderful" studio portraiture workshop (sponsored by Blue World Media and co-taught with my friend Michael Dunphy), I had the pleasure of doing a portrait session for a wonderful, multi-talented musician, Jeff Herbert.
Jeff is an accomplished BagPiper and Singer/Guitarist with over 15 years bagpipe experience and over 30 years guitar/vocal experience. In addition to his solo career, he is a charter member of the Washington DC Fire Department Pipes and Drums Band. Jeff's solo performances include high profile events at the Vietnam War Memorial, at Arlington National Cemetery, and before members of Congress on Capitol Hill. His music ranges from Celtic to Folk, Pop and Rock.
For my portrait of Jeff, the guitar playing man, I imagined an itinerant troubadour, traveling from town to town, singing his songs for tips. As he leaves one town to continue his journey, you might see him walking head down, lost in his own thoughts, contemplating the miles ahead, the guitar strapped to his back.
To realize this vision, I lit a profile view of Jeff's face, and made sure to showcase the beautiful guitar in very subdued fill light behind him. Finally, to complete the feeling of times gone by, I converted the original photograph, captured in color, to a sepia-toned black and white image.
I love the soulfulness of the final portrait.
