DMV portrait photographer Roger Hammons shares a portrait of actor George Melik in hard hat under a downpour.

POUR IT ON

Recently, my friend Philip Brasch invited me to help teach a night-time portraiture class for the Northern Virginia Professional Photographers Association (NVPPA).  The class offered a taste of our upcoming natural light portraiture workshop, sponsored by the Professional Photographers of America (PPA) under its Super 1-Day program, plus a little bit extra.

The night's photoshoot with actor George Melik was a blast!  Such a good sport, when George is in character, not even a downpour can get him down.

For most of the class, we worked with the lighting provided by the existing building lights, supplementing them with a pair of LED light panels on stands when necessary.  But, when the rain started to pour, we brought out a Quantum Q-flash strobe with a softbox modifier to use as our main light source.  The ultra-short duration of flash allows us to stop the raindrops in mid-fall.

In this photograph, I love how the rain pours off the hardhat, splattering, and sparkling like little crystals in the night.  The moody light and stoic expression of our "Can Do" hero combine to create a dramatic, storytelling portrait.

Powerful stuff!
