WELCOME TO ROGER HAMMONS PHOTOGRAPHY

Deeply seen, deeply felt, deeply remembered.

We are a boutique Northern Virginia photography studio located in Ashburn, Virginia, specializing in wedding photography, portrait photography, and fine art photography.

We love to photograph Maryland weddings, Virginia weddings, and DC weddings of all traditions!  Whether yours is an opposite-sex marriage or a same-sex marriage, we'd love to get to know you and your unique love story.  And, however you and your family decide to celebrate two lives passionately shared -- religious or secular, traditional or avant garde, western or non-western -- we would be honored to capture those memories in wedding photographs that are deeply seen, deeply felt, and deeply remembered.

We provide commercial and lifestyle portrait sessions in our Loudoun County, Virginia studio or on-location within the greater Washington DC metropolitan area, including Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.

We provide engagement photography sessions for MD VA DC wedding couples, whether we do the wedding photography or not.  These unique sessions are great fun, especially when the location and theme are tailored to the couple's love story.

Please enjoy my wedding photography, portrait photography, and fine art photography blog!  I hope you find the eclectic diversity of images -- as well as my thoughts on their design and creation -- both entertaining and educational.

I hope they draw you in and inspire within you a sense of peace and well-being this holiday season. Italy is special. When my wife and I were graduate students at UCLA, we saved one of ou...

KRISH HAD JUST STARTED WALKING. To prepare for Krish's 15-month portrait session, I asked his mother Ami to tell me a little bit about her son. She told me that he's very smiley; loves dump trucks, blocks, balls, and Cheerios; babbles a lot; does not like to be held; doesn't walk yet but likes to roam; and says a few real words. Did you catch tha...

How to Take Better Children's Photos: Tip 3

TIP #3. LET THEM BE Once you've found great light (see Tip 1) and a background that accentuates your subject (see Tip 2), your next objective is to draw out a great expression from the child. This is very challenging, and no strategy is guaranteed to suit every child (or even every photographer). You must be creative. And "Say cheese!" is not my...

I was thrilled when my wedding photograph entitled "Our Love Is Evergreen" won best-in-show honors in the wedding category at a recent Maryland Professional Photographers Association (MDPPA) photography competition, but I was not surprised. What a fantastic landscape! Its natural beauty offers a wonderful setting for an environmen...

How to Take Better Children's Photos: Tip 2

TIP #2. SIMPLIFY THE BACKGROUND It's all about the storytelling. A confusing background competes with the subject for the viewer's attention, leading to a less than satisfactory portrait. Remember that everything visible in a photograph is there only because the photographer chose to include it. If the background is cluttered, the photographer ch...
