SUSAN -- CAUGHT ON CAMERA -- ON THE PLAZA, WITH A KNIFE, AT NIGHT.
(It's called abetting when you help set it all up!)
Susan is a master pastry chef, just starting up a new sweet-treat catering company she calls SweetFreakz. She was one of the models who participated in the madcap PPA Super 1 Day workshop, "Lifestyle Photography and the Art of Natural Light," recently taught by Philip Brasch and myself.
The workshop was so much fun and inspirational that Philip and I stayed long into the night, well past the end of the workshop, to work with Susan in our "street-lamp street studio." We used the nighttime street lamps as our principal lights (both main and accent) and added LED panel lights on stands to refine the set-up.
In the street-lamp studio, we started with portraits illustrating her work as a pastry chef, using a tray of sweets (YUM!) and various kitchen utensils as props.
Afterwards, Susan brought out a "blood"-stained chef's knife, and I almost whooped in delight! I set up a few different poses to play with the bloody knife. This is one of my favorite portraits from the session.
The portrait has the feeling of a suspenseful English murder mystery, with the top hat, bloody knife, and upscale ambiance and theatrical lighting. The way Susan holds the bloody knife so casually speaks chillingly of her expertise and comfort in handling it.
Most of all I love that delicious self-satisfied smile that Susan gave me!
How did I elicit such a perfect expression? I just asked Susan to imagine me at the business end of her knife. That did it!
