SUMMER DAY AT MONDSEE, AUSTRIA

My wife and I just recently returned from a whirlwind two-week road trip through Prague, Vienna, Salzburg, Munich, Zurich, the Black Forest of Germany, and Nuremberg (and sites in-between!) with close friends Don and Fran.  While I certainly haven't had time to complete my edit of the many hundreds of images from the trip, I wanted to share one of my favorite images so far.

I like travel in part because you don't know what you're going to find.  And the serendipitous "discovered" photograph is one of my strengths, and pleasures, as a fine-art photographer.

The little town of Mondsee, near Salzburg, wasn't on our planned itinerary, but we were intrigued by views from the roadway of a large lake at the foot of the mountains in the distance, so we made a side trip to check it out.

Mondsee is quite a jewel.  The quaint village up the hill from the lake resort is picturesque with a lively town square.  And the view of the mountains dropping so precipitously to the beautiful alpine lake is indeed breathtaking!

I love this photograph of the little girl on the dock.  It is a quiet image that moves me in ways I do not fully understand.

I enjoy the image as a landscape photograph:  I think it shows off the lake, mountains, and resort qualities of Mondsee in a visually pleasing manner.

The addition of the little girl in the frame, however, adds a mysterious human touch to the landscape.  I remember times I've spent as a child on the beach, near the water.  I wonder what the little girl is thinking.

I wonder why she is there, all alone.

Thank you, Laura, for your thoughtful comment! I am glad that you find the photograph as beautiful as I do. I too enjoy the implication that she is absorbed in her own thoughts. On that theme, perhaps the bright white boat represents the possibilities of life that await her.

This is such a beautiful photograph. It truly captures the juxtaposition of personal introspection within our own turbulent lives. I think everyone can see themselves in that young girl. I know I can.
