This is the first portrait I took of 15-year-old Lydia as part of my joint project with Gallery252 and Blue World Media Network. It's such a different look than her hijab portrait, which I posted earlier.
In this experiment, I was trying to make a portrait in a small pocket of natural light in front of a small wavy-patterned wall in the studio. Because the light was better lower on the wall, I had Lydia sit rather than stand. I found a white chair to match the white wall and turned it sideways so that the curved armrest echoed the wall's waves.
I love the quietness and authenticity of this portrait.
Although the light is less directional than I would have preferred, it is still quite lovely, and Lydia's face is aglow. The casual outfit and decorative necklace are Lydia's everyday clothes. And, sittting casually in the chair, Lydia presents herself to the camera in a natural way.
The overall effect is a genuine portrait -- a portrait of a thoughtful young woman, the young woman that Lydia is becoming at this age.
