POCKETS OF PERFECTION
I love the "doing" of a portrait session, whether in studio or on location. The collaboration between photographer and model is always fascinating, and the results can be magical.
I also enjoy the "pre-doing," the preparatory work that goes into an on-location session, especially the site survey to scope out a new location. To prepare for an upcoming engagement session, I visited Ellanor C Lawrence Park in Chantilly, Virginia for the first time this past weekend.
Usually, my site surveying is a solitary effort, spent walking about, examining the available light and potential backdrops, and capturing reference photographs to use for more detailed planning. This time, however, one of my favorite portrait subjects, Autumn, joined me for an impromptu mini session as part of the site survey.
For outdoor portrait sessions, I prefer a location that has many little nooks with both nice natural light and attractive background -- areas I call "pockets of perfection" -- all within easy walking distance. At Ellanor C Lawrence Park, there were such pockets aplenty!
The above natural-light portrait of Autumn illustrates how beautiful these pockets of perfection can be -- especially with a model as beautiful as she.
